Port of Big Creek



Overview
The Port of Big Creek is a deep water sea port facility in the south of Belize. It is situated in Big Creek, Stann Creek District at Latitude 16 30 10 and Longitude 88 24 00. The port started its operations in 1990 and was the first privately owned port. All bananas, citrus and oil are exported through the Port of Big Creek. We are a small port strategically poised for expansion awaiting new business opportunities.

Services: Tug and barge, stevedoring, property rental, ship agency and storage

 

Location: The Port of Big Creek is located 2.5km inland from the entrance of Big Creek at Latitude 16 30 10 and Longitude 88 24 00. The port´s location makes it a strategic alternative for transshipment through Guatemala

 

Schedule: Delivery: Regular cargo: Monday–Friday 0800hrs – 1700hrs
Fresh fruit: Monday–Saturday 0800hrs–2030hrs
Frozen cargo: Monday–Saturday 0800hrs–2030hrs

 

Access: The port can be reached via a 45 minutes domestic flight from Belize City to Savannah airstrip and thereafter, a two minutes drive. It is also accessible via road, a 2 ½ hour drive charting the Hummingbird and Southern Highway. These roads are fully paved and can accommodate trucks with containers and heavy equipment.

Pre- arrival information:

Master of Vessel is required to fill out an Arrival Notice Form & send to us via e-mail 48 hrs prior to arrival in Belize territorial waters.

 

On entering territorial waters of Belize, call "Belize Ports" and advise of time entering Belize Territorial Waters on VHF channel 16. Also advise the Belize Port of the frequency on your HF Radio if any.

"Belize Ports" is the Country's Port Authority.

Anchorage: Anchorage Position at pilot Boarding Grounds: Latitude 16°.26.2, Longitude: 88°.21.8, ½ mile south of No. 2 Buoy.

 

Pilotage: Compulsory,
Pilot Station Position: LATITUDE 16° 26 Minutes 86 Seconds, LONGITUDE 88° 21 Minutes 65 Seconds.

 

Berthing: It is possible to berth either portside to or starboard side to in winds up to 15 knots unaided subject to reasonable handling characteristics. The length of the berth is 305m with concrete aprons of 120m. Berth is located at:

LATITUDE 16° 30 Minutes
LONGITUDE 88° 24 Minutes

 

Channel: The channel is buoyed and dredged at the entrance 1.5km leading into Big Creek and thereafter, 305m of fully fendered - in quay with a depth alongside of 6.7m below Chart Datum. The channel has been dredged to a minimum depth of 7.0m for the first 1.5km and thereafter to a minimum of 6.7m. The channel width of 67m has been created at the fully dredged depth to permit single way ship movements.

 

Equipment/ Cranes/Type of Cranes: The Port of Big Creek is fully equipped with a backup power supply to handle refrigerated containers, break bulk cargo, fresh produce, grain & dry containers. Four container handlers with a capacity of 40 tons each are available, 1 American Crane with a capacity of 35 tons, 7 Diesel Forklifts and 7 Electric Forklifts

 

Storage: Two storage warehouses are available:
Banana Transit Shed: 40mx30m
Boxes Storage: 30mx25m
The storage capacity of the compound is approximately 600 x 40’containers

 

Fresh water: Available

 

Towage: There is one tug available, Tugboat Miss Gayle 1800hp

 

Ship Repairs: Not done presently

 

Medical Services: Hospital facilities are available

Program of Expansion: There is a plan to construct an additional 100m of berth space to existing dock. Conducting cost benefit analysis of dredging deeper to accommodate larger vessels.
